How my job brought me to blogging

2 year ago, I was fresh out of university (a great one btw). Then, my only real-world experiences were of 2 years of web programming and corporate design skills, internships of IT-training and IT-testing. I was eager to use my Bachelor of Science in Information Systems Management to get a IT, non-specialised job.
And I did get what I wanted. At my new job, I started out doing research on technology companies, personal technology news, latest gadgets offerings, latest acquisition, etc. It’s during one of these sessions when I found out about Twitter.
It was a revelation. Or at least to me.
I wasn’t new to social media. I started blogging (private) in 2003, on and off for a while. I was pretty active at Friendster; testimonials and stuff. Had a personal domain for 3 years. Joined Facebook in late 2007.
But I always thought social media was for fun, for leisure, things you do to catch up with friends. Nothing serious. But I was wrong! Apparently, I had been buried in books, seminars, essays with the rest of time spent with family & friends.
So, in a way, because of what I was doing at work, I found out another side of social media – professional use. I could quickly find out what was the latest technology news based on what bloggers were talking about, linking to, on Twitter. Read bite-size, concise information, decide if it’s worth to explore and click to other sites where more details are available.
I was excited and wanted to blog about my thoughts, technical happenings, social media immediately! Created a blog at vox.com but ended up filling it with past tweets. I was hesitant to write – what if my opinions were taken as such of my company? do I have time to write? I was undecided and that blog never materialised.
That’s not to say I didn’t pursue my interests in social media. I did. Using twitter whenever I can. Reading as much as my work and personal time allow me to. Explored many other web apps. Developing my professional capabilities with the help of social media & Internet. I just didn’t write all that down.
So yea, I am finally on a writing journey, to chart my personal goals while I balance my time between work and family.
Is your work impactful? So so, how did it change your life?
